Talking

Nothing passes here. Nothing at all. This is the entire window the game is asking you to use, and it is wide open the whole time you are sitting down.

Carries: no risk, and every option still available to you.

Touching

Skin on skin, before anything else happens. Most people file this under harmless. It is not nothing.

Carries: HPV, which spreads by skin contact and does not require intercourse. Herpes, both types, often with nothing visible. Syphilis through contact with a sore. Scabies and pubic lice.

Kissing

The step almost nobody counts. One kiss is a transmission event for several things, and the question is still easy to ask at this point.

Carries: HSV-1, carried by roughly two in three people under 50 worldwide. Syphilis when an oral sore is present. CMV and the mono virus through saliva. Gonorrhea in the throat. Not HIV — saliva does not transmit it.

Heated

Oral contact, clothes coming off, barriers almost never reached for. The question is still available, but now it sounds like a brake instead of a conversation.

Carries: gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis and herpes, usually with no symptoms in the throat. HPV, where certain strains are linked to cancers years later.

Upstairs

Everything from every step above, at higher transmission rates, plus the ones that need this step.

Carries: HIV, trichomoniasis, hepatitis B. Around 42 million new genital herpes infections a year worldwide — roughly one per second. More than one in five adults aged 15 to 49 has it, and most have never been diagnosed.

Look at step zero again. Everything you needed was available while you were still just talking, and it cost nothing.

Most transmission comes from people who did not know. Not liars. People nobody ever asked.

Ask early. That is the whole lesson.
